Brazilian, born November 19th, 1937. Married, with two sons. Joined the Brazilian Foreign Service in 1961. Dealt with international trade issues for most of his professional life, having served as Chairman and Spokesman of the Producers’ Group in the International Coffee Organization from 1979 to 1985. Was President of the Brazilian Coffee Institute (IBC) and Chief Negotiator of Brazil’s External Debt from 1990 to 1991 when the moratorium was suspended. Having retired in 1998 as Ambassador to the European Union, was CEO of Vale, one the biggest mining companies in the world, from 1999 to 2001. Was Chairman of the Board of Ferrous do Brasil Ltd. (Isle of Man), member of the Executive Board of the Global Crop Diversity Trust (responsible for the Global Seed Vault in Svalbard) and member of the International Advisory Committee of Iberdola (Spain) and Chairman of the Boards of Taurus Armas and Taurus International Manufacturing Incorporated (Brainbridge. Georgia, USA). At present is a business consultant and Chairman of the Deliberative Council of Taurus Foundation. As a translator, has specialized in the works of J.D. Salinger (The Catcher in the Rye, among others), Vladimir Nabokov (Lolita, Pale Fire, Pnin, among others), Ian McEwan, Philip Roth, George Saunders and Salman Rushdie among many others.
