Having retired in 1998 as Ambassador to the European Union, was CEO of Vale, one the biggest mining companies in the world, from 1999 to 2001. Was Chairman of the Board of Ferrous do Brasil Ltd. (Isle of Man) and a member of the International Advisory Committee of Iberdola (Spain) . Is now Chairman of the Boards of Taurus Armas and Taurus International Manufacturing Incorporated (Brainbridge. Georgia, USA) As a translator, has specialized in the works of J.D. Salinger (The Catcher in the Rye, among others), Vladimir Nabokov (Lolita, Pale Fire, Pnin, among others), Ian McEwan, Philip Roth, George Saunders and Salman Rushdie among many others.
